Lebanon: The Fondation Pierre Fabre supports the deployment of two Mobile Medical Units in partnership with the Order of Malta Lebanon
20/03/2026
Since the escalation of the conflict in Lebanon, the humanitarian and health situation has deteriorated significantly. To date, there have been 912 deaths, including 111 children, and more than 2,200 people have been injured. More than a million people have been forced to leave their homes: of these, 133,414 have found refuge in collective shelters, while 916,000 people are being housed informally — with relatives, in vehicles or in community spaces. Health infrastructure has been severely affected, with 5 hospitals out of service and 44 primary health centres closed
A mobile medical unit deployed in two priority areas
In this context, the Fondation Pierre Fabre has provided emergency aid to the Order of Malta Lebanon (OML) for the deployment of two Mobile Medical Units (MMUs). One is operating in West Bekaa, in Kefraya; the other in Mount Lebanon, in the Chouf. These two areas are hosting a significant number of displaced people, housed in schools, public buildings and community shelters. Due to almost daily population movements, it remains difficult to establish precise figures on the number of displaced people in these areas.
The Order of Malta Lebanon provides a nationwide medical and social response covering 74 shelters. In the Kefraya and Chouf areas, the Order of Malta Lebanon is supporting 8 shelters housing around 1,000 displaced people, in addition to refugees and vulnerable members of local communities.
A wide range of healthcare needs
Rapid assessments carried out in shelters have highlighted a variety of medical needs: chronic conditions requiring ongoing monitoring, high-risk pregnancies, neurological conditions, respiratory illnesses, infections, as well as psychosocial issues linked to the conflict, particularly among children.
The services provided by the Mobile Medical Units (MMUs) include general medical consultations, screening and monitoring of chronic and infectious conditions, home visits for vulnerable cases, referrals to hospitals, the provision of essential medicines, and health awareness activities. The provision is complemented by the distribution of hygiene kits, clothing, food, drinking water and psychosocial support kits for children.
An operational partnership on the field
This deployment forms part of the Pierre Fabre Foundation’s work to ensure access to healthcare in crisis situations, supporting partner organisations with an established local presence and expertise. The Order of Malta Lebanon, a recognised healthcare provider in Lebanon, is responsible for the operational implementation of this initiative.
Figures taken from field assessments and the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health as at 17 March 2025. The situation is evolving rapidly and these figures are subject to change.
